If it Hadn’t Been for the Lord
I recently read Psalm 124 and was drawn to the words and the style of this particular Psalm. It reminded me of a season in my life and the Lord had walked with me every step. The line “If it had not been for the Lord” is a worthy statement to consider and give some thought. What would your life or a season in your life look like without the Lord? Where would you be without heeding His direction?
This is what David says of the Lord in Psalm 124:
If it had not been the Lord who was on our side—
Psalm 124
let Israel now say—
2 if it had not been the Lord who was on our side
when people rose up against us,
3 then they would have swallowed us up alive,
when their anger was kindled against us;
4 then the flood would have swept us away,
the torrent would have gone over us;
5 then over us would have gone
the raging waters. 6 Blessed be the Lord,
who has not given us
as prey to their teeth!
7 We have escaped like a bird
from the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken,
and we have escaped! 8 Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
After reading this Psalm and considering the words I began to write my own version. The words poured out of me as I remembered how the Lord had spared and protected me during a season in my life. As I finished I felt the victory that comes with a life hidden in Christ and submitting to Truth. Here is my version of Psalm 124:
“1 If it had not been for the Lord who was on my side-
Let me now say-2 If it had not been for the Lord on my side
When they called out to discredit me.3 Then they would have swallowed me up
When their control over me was threatened.4 The abandonment would have crushed me
The loss would have been too much.5 Then depression would have devoured me. Bless the Lord who has not given me over to be broken.
6 I escaped like a bird from a snare of the fowlers;
The snare is broken,7 And I have escaped! Our help is in the name of the Lord
Who made heaven and earth.”
David was clearly experiencing a situation that was the threatening and dangerous but God brought him to a place of victory. I felt that same victory in my season and I went back to God’s word to see how I could escape this situation.
Have you been in a place where you don’t know where you would have been without the Lord? I encourage you to take Psalm 124 and rewrite it to be your Psalm of victorious praise to the Lord for being with you!
