A Moment in His Courts

I like to judge my husband when he sits down to do something that refreshes him (except if he is reading the Bible because come on… all the heart eyes). Doesn’t he know there are like a million dishes in the sink? How about the clean laundry that’s been moved from our bed to the floor for the last three nights? I am basically, the worst at taking care of myself. I have a constant mental ‘to-do’ list running in my head and I struggle to relax. Anyone else with me? The problem is self-care, never lasts. It’s skin deep and it is necessary, but it is not as refreshing as soul-care…

Well, I was convicted of my need to find rest last year as our small group with church went through the book, Emotional Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero. He has a chapter dedicated to the topic of sabbath rest. He encourages his readers to stop and have mini-sabbaths each day to celebrate God in an act called “the Daily Office”. The Daily Office is a pausing to not GET something from God but to BE with God! Wow, the paradigm shift is amazing, it takes ‘work’ and makes it ‘worship’! I don’t know about you, but I want to worship, work is no fun!

For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Psalm 84:10

How beautiful is that picture – to be with our Lord for even just ONE day would be so satisfying and soul reviving! That even to stand at the gate would be better than ANYTHING this world has to offer us! Feel free to shout ‘amen’ out loud, you might have to explain yourself but that is part of the fun! Sharing with others in the celebrate of God’s goodness is soul electrifying!

Let’s look at the four aspects of the Daily Office…

{1} Stopping – It doesn’t matter if you do 1 Daily Office or 10 during your day but the most important part is stopping and not rushing from God’s presence. You also must surrender control and remind yourself that He rules, you don’t – He is on the throne. I also want to add that in my mind, timing is up to you. 5 minutes of stopping and communing with the Lord throughout the day can go A LONG way!

Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

{2} Centering – Sit still, breathe slowly and close your eyes. If your mind is wandering breathe deeply and center your focus back on your incredible Savior and Creator. This is a time to be mindful of your sin nature and how you need your God every hour.

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him. Psalm 37:7

{3} Silence – silence and solitude are paramount to the Christian walk but we often struggle to attain in our busy lives. Think back over all of the Bible stories you know and consider how often God asked them to simple ‘wait on Him’! In our stillness God does show up! This isn’t a time about us, it is about God and waiting to hear His ‘still small voice’. Maybe you have kids running around your feet so literal silence might isn’t an option. But we do have control over setting down our phones, closing the laptop screen, etc. Silence is a decision to make God loud and the World quiet.

Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Isaiah 40:31

{4} Scripture – This is my favorite part! During this time where your heart in a worshipful listening posture we read or listen to God’s word. The Psalms are great for this, but it could also be a verse that you have memorized or are memorizing. Maybe it is a specific Scripture you chose to combat a temptation or situation in your life. It is something worshipful and centered on WHO God is and His character.

I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. Psalm 119:16

Are you overwhelmed? Friend, I am. Right now, as I type this I am weary. I need to hear literally every word I am sharing with you. This is worship for me. This is the Holy Spirit sweetly whispering the truths of God’s word to me. And now, after that little kick in the buns by the Lord, I am going to go have my Daily Office, will you join me?
